Chapter Twenty-Four
Moscow leaned over his plate, a hunk of bread in one hand, a mug of strong coffee in the other, his half-lidded eyes proof that he hadnât slept at all the night before. Chiori couldnât fault him considering sheâd slept very little herself, leaving her slightly sore in all the right places. The tension heâd been carrying the day before was gone, and he was back to his regular, less prickly temperament. She sipped her tea and listened to him speak.
Heâd done a little work while heâd played his night away. Most of the memory wiped demons had left town shortly after their arrival, scattering to wherever theyâd come from, but some of them had stuck around. There was a hostel on the other side of town where a handful of them had holed up.
âItâs called the Five Oaks. I couldnât get any of their names, though I did find out that one of them is a river sprite. They donât hang out there much, since theyâve taken an assortment of jobs around the Collective, but thereâs a saloon downstairs, and lunch time is the best chance of catching one,â Moscow concluded, setting his mug down in favor of a bowl of oatmeal.
Saya and Yuuki had used Gideon as their reason to convince housekeeping to give them permission to eat in their rooms. Theyâd reasoned that the less time he spent in the common room downstairs, the less commotion would be made over him. The cat demon had begrudgingly brought a round table and chairs into Saya and Yuukiâs room, warning them not to make any messes in her boarding house.
âIf we all descend on the place at once it could spook them off before we get to talk to anyone. It should be one of us, or a pair. The remaining can continue asking around at other venues,â Yuuki said. âPersonally, I am not interested in seeking out another sprite at this time, so I opt out of going to the Five Oaks.â
âGideon and I can go have a look around, see if we can find them,â Chiori volunteered and he shrugged his acceptance.
âPerfect. Iâm going to get a nap in before getting back into it,â Moscow said, downing the rest of his coffee and walking out.
The four of them explored the city together, killing time until lunch, listening for any fellow Northerners. Much to Gideonâs amusement, Chiori had belted her axe onto a hip and brought him his collar and leash. She kept her arm wrapped through his, and anytime anyone looked his way she fixed them with a withering glare, her hand gravitating toward the handle of her axe. He happily played along, perfectly comfortable with the spell binding them together even tighter than their mating bond.
Yuuki stopped at a spice shop to replenish her supplies, adding some Rosemary which had proven difficult to find in the wild. She asked a couple of easy questions and turned her big violet eyes on the shop keep. The sparrow demon never had a chance.
